We will now present some of the study data on PeakO2®.
A study which involved athletes saw that those who were supplemented with PeakO2® experienced a 17.6% increase in peak power output whilst those on placebo saw an 11.8% decline. This study clearly showcased PeakO2®’s ability to increase power generation during extended workout periods.
Another study looked at ATP production (the primary energy carrier in the cells); a process which is vital to optimise during high intensity workouts. The study found that ATP production was increased with PeakO2®, and blood lactate levels were reduced, enabling the participants to train for longer with lower general muscle fatigue.
A time to exhaustion study essentially measured the endurance in a PeakO2® supplemented group and a placebo group. They found that the PeakO2® users outperformed the placebo group by 70 seconds in high intensity exercises, who only saw a 5 second improvement in time to exhaustion. The results clearly showed that PeakO2® has a significant impact on endurance and fatigue resistance.
VO2 Max, otherwise known as maximal oxygen uptake, is the maximum rate at which an individual can consume oxygen during intense or maximal exercise. It is generally recognised as an accurate measure of aerobic capacity (or aerobic fitness), reflecting the efficiency at which an individual’s body can transport and use oxygen during physical exercise. It is usually measured in millilitres of oxygen consumed per minute per kilogram of body weight (ml/kg/min).
PeakO2® users saw an increase in VO2 max by nearly 4ml/kg/min, which clearly showed its effectiveness in improving oxygen consumption and cardiovascular performance.
We also included beetroot extract in Peak Endurance, delivering 450mg of nitrates per serving. The research has shown that nitrate supplements offer a variety of benefits which are required for performance.
Oxygen cost is the amount of oxygen your body requires in order to perform activity. Nitrate supplements have been shown in research to reduce the oxygen cost of submaximal exercise, which increases exercise efficiency and endurance performance; this essentially means that the body requires less oxygen to perform at the same level, enabling the body to maintain higher work rate for longer periods of time [1][2][4].
Studies in running and cycling have found significant improvements in endurance exercise performance with nitrate supplementation, making a strong case for long-endurance activities being benefited from nitrate supplementation [1][2][4].
Nitrate supplements have been shown to also potentially improve muscle contractile efficiency, allowing more work to be performed per unit of energy which is expended. This essentially means that with the improvement in muscle efficiency, consumers of nitrates can push harder and for longer. [2][4].
Studies have indicated that nitrate supplementation may extend the time to exhaustion during intense workouts, which allows athletes to maintain high performance for longer [1][4].
Nitrate intake is associated with reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, which contributes to improved blood flow (which in turn increases oxygen delivery to muscles), improving exercise performance and overall cardiovascular health [1][4].
The general mechanism of action for nitrates is that they are first converted to nitrite, following which they are converted into nitric oxide, which dilates the blood vessels, improves blood flow, and reduces ATP consumption during muscle contraction whilst improving mitochondrial efficiency [1][4].
It is generally understood that nitrate supplementation increases blood flow to active muscles, which reduces oxygen consumption and improves contractile efficiency of the muscles. This essentially means that the muscles are more efficient, using less oxygen to contract at a higher rate, meaning that you can work harder whilst using less oxygen [1][4].
Chronix nitrate supplementation over several days has shown a significant improvement in time trial performance, compared to acute supplementation which shows less consistent results. This generally suggests that nitrate supplements are better to be taken consistently over a period of time to maximise results [3].
